Here’s how I get ready for spring fishing, maintain my gear, and stay safe while enjoying the sport we all love.

Reel maintenance will prolong the life of your gear and keep things operating at optimal level

Reel Maintenance Is Very Important

Lets begin with my essential spring fishing preparation tips

Getting Your Gear Ready for Spring

After months of storage, fishing gear needs a thorough check. Dirt and moisture can cause damage if ignored. Here’s are some essential spring fishing preparation tips that I follow:

  • Clean and inspect rods and reels

I wipe down my rods with a damp cloth to remove dust and grime. I always check my guides over as well. They can become loose as well as coating can chip and cause line fray. For reels, I carefully remove the spool and tear down my reel. Lubricating moving parts with reel oil and grease keeps your reel spinning smoothly. Cleaning out the debris that builds up is important and prolongs the life of your gear.

  • Check fishing lines

Lines can weaken or develop nicks over time. I replace my line every year on all my rods to prevent wear and losing that big fish. Although it can be expensive, depending on your setups, its worth the investment and time. Making sure you have the correct line for the species you are targeting is also key.

  • Organize tackle and lures

I sort through my tackle box, tossing damaged hooks and lures. I also restock essentials like bobbers, sinkers, and extra hooks. Having the right bait ready saves time on the water. I always make sure my Slayin' Sauce is fully stocked!

  • Test your equipment

Before heading out, I cast a few practice throws in the backyard or local pond. This helps me spot any issues with casting or reel drag.

Fishing With Slayin' Sauce ©

Slayin' Sauce © is by far the superior attractant that every angler should have in their tackle box. It's versatility allows you to use it however you see fit. Here’s how I use it:

  • Spoons / Spinners

Our original Slayin' Sauce © works best for spoons or spinners. Apply a dab of Slayin' Sauce to the backside of your spoon or spinner and give it a smear. A small amount is all you need. Re-apply as necessary, however, in most conditions it will last all day and multiple catches. Note: remember to rinse your lures at the end of the day to wash any remnants off.

  • Soft Plastics

Our new Injector Series will definitely up your soft plastic game. Using the Injector you can put attractant where it really counts! We highly recommend using with tube baits to enhance your experience. Simply put the injector where you want it and squeeze the plunger into the area of your choice.

Slayin' Sauce © is proven to be multi-species and works well on trout, salmon, pike, bass, and even catfish. It’s a simple way to elevate your fishing trip into a memorable experience.

Safety Precautions for Spring Fishing

Spring weather can be unpredictable, and safety should always come first. Here are some precautions I follow:

  • Check the weather forecast

I always look at the forecast before leaving. Sudden storms or cold snaps can ruin a trip or create dangerous conditions.

  • Wear appropriate clothing

Layering is key. I wear moisture-wicking base layers and bring a waterproof jacket. A hat and polarized sunglasses protect against sun glare and help spot fish underwater.

  • Bring safety gear

Life jackets are a must if fishing from a boat. I also carry a first aid kit and plenty of water. Having your boat safety kit is also a must in case of an emergency.

  • Tell someone your plan

I let a friend or family member know where I’ll be fishing and when I expect to return. This simple step can be crucial in an emergency.

  • Be mindful of wildlife and environment

Respect local regulations and avoid disturbing habitats. I pack out all trash and use eco-friendly bait such as Slayin' Sauce © when possible.

Final Thoughts on Spring Fishing Preparation

Preparing for spring fishing means more than just grabbing your rod and heading out. Taking time to maintain your gear and plan your safety will ensure a solid adventure. When your equipment works well and you’re ready for the conditions, you can focus on the thrill of the catch and the joy of the outdoors.
